Witbier

Back in June, the Wuz On Tap girls were preparing two brews for their upcoming trip to the beach. The first was a Sweet Raspberry Wheat. The second was the Witbier, a nice wheaty white ale to drink during the summer months. We weren’t able to get a proper hydrometer reading, so the ABV is still unclear, but the witbier came out tasty and refreshing, and that’s all we ask.

Suh-weet Raspberry Wheat

Summer is almost here, and the Wuz On Tap brewers have been busy getting ready. Getting ready for what you ask? Why that time of year where wheat beers reign supreme, and the Sun makes it so hot that more than one case of beer is necessary for a card game. In order to prepare for this wondrous time of year that only the gods can provide, we decided to brew a fruit flavored, easy drinking wheat beer. So far we are still in primary fermentation, but the original gravity was spot on and things are looking fermentable. Meaning we should have a very tasty beer for the summer months (or a game of cards).

The Ole Speckled Heifer

Earlier this year, the Wuz On Tap girls brewed a delicious speckled heifer ale. We’re not going to lie, we picked the recipe both for the name and the description! “Sometimes a beer is just a beer… have one.” So, that is what we did!
Brewing Belgian Style
Posted by admin | All-grain, Brewing, Home brew | Posted on January 31st, 2011
The Wuz On Tap girls are starting 2011 off right by making our first brew of the year a delicious Belgian Tripel. This time, we tried something new in our brewing process by adding a Yeast Starter. Previously we would simply use the liquid wyeast straight from the packet, but after doing some research, we found that we could ensure higher alcohol content by using a Yeast Starter to jump start our yeast. So far things are looking good in primary fermentation as the yeast are eating away and ensuring we have a nice high ABV for this brew. Next stop is secondary fermentation!

Some of you may have heard and some of you may not have, but us Wuz On Tap girls got to serve our brew at a clam bake back in September! We showed up to an awesome spread put on by one of the surgeons that Lynn works with. The setup was amazing and we got to hang out on the Long Island Sound all day. The crowd loved the brew and it looks like we’re on our way!
For the event we brewed two different brews. You can read more about the brewing adventure in our post Mission impossible: 2 All-grain brews, 1 day.

Oregon Beer Trail – Day 7
Posted by admin | Beer Trail | Posted on September 13th, 2010
Day 7 was our last and final day on the trail. We couldn’t have been more sad to say goodbye to a week full of beer. Our first stop was an amazing breakfast at Detour Cafe. After much deliberation we both decided to get the famous breakfast sandwich “The Don”. If you go there, you should get it… it’s amazing!
We headed back to the hotel to drop off the car, then walked across the Morrison Bridge to get to Green Dragon. We tried to stop at Hair of the Dog along the way, but unfortunately the tasting room was closed, maybe next time. Green Dragon was great. 50 craft beers on tap, some of them brewed in house. We got good and beered up then walked back across the bridge for our next stop. Another one of our stops was closed (Bailey’s) so we continued on to Deschutes. Deschutes had the coolest setup. All the kegs were under the bar but you could see through to where they were. They also had some great beers and good food for lunch. After a day full of beer we decided to head back to the hotel. We got dressed then headed out for an incredible sushi dinner… sad that it would be our last dinner on the trail. To end it all we decided to have one last brew, or two, in the hotel bar. We couldn’t believe it was all over! The trail had taken us on many an adventure, introduced us to a ton of new brews as well as great people. Oregon… you’re a great place.
In closing, we’ll say this… the beer trail is not for the faint of heart. Drinking beer for 7 days straight sounds easy, but it’s an athletic event! It takes diligence and perseverance. Thankfully the Wuz On Tap girls were able to pull through as champions. Until next time beer trail… we’ll miss you.
Oregon Beer Trail – Day 6
Posted by admin | Beer Trail | Posted on September 12th, 2010
On Day 6 of the beer trail we got up early to begin our trip to Portland, and to beat the crazy Hood River parking costs (who knew?). Before leaving Hood River, we grabbed a delicious Oregon bagel and coffee. We hopped (no pun intended) in the car and headed to Beervana.
When we got to Portland we spent some time trying to find a hotel. Apparently there was a huge race along the Columbia River that weekend and every place was sold out. We ended up finding a room and proceeded to head out for the day. We made a detour to the local Apple store (problems with Lis’ iPad). Once that was taken care of, we decided to head to the oldest Brew Pub in Portland… Bridgeport Brewpub.
We headed to Portland’s Pearl district, and sat ourselves down to see what Bridgeport had to offer. Of course we got the sampler so that we could taste all of Bridgeport’s goodness and they were good… their Amber Ale was to die for. One thing we noticed about the entire city of Portland is that it was awfully similar in atmosphere and philosophy to Austin, TX… where the city motto is “Keep Austin Weird”. Who would’ve thunk that the bartender and other Bridgeport employee’s would be wearing shirts that read “Keep Portland Beered”?? Who wouldn’t love this city??
After several barley treats we walked back to the room to rest up. There was a random Italian festival in town that we wanted to be sure to see, so after we got our rest in we headed that way. We walked around enjoying the Opera and Frank Sinatra music as well as some Italian vino. It was a wonderful relaxing pre-dinner treat. We finished up the night drinking vino at an Italian joint in town (yes vino… remember no discrimination), then turned in for the night…. Day 7 was going to be our last day so we had to go out with a bang!

Oregon Beer Trail – Day 5
Posted by admin | Beer Trail | Posted on September 10th, 2010
Day 5 on the trail was most exciting. We decided to get up early to go for a hike in the Mount Hood National Forest. We went downstairs, got our Hood River Hotel breakfast voucher and had a delicious breakfast. Then we headed out for our nature activity for the trip.
We drove along the Columbia River Gorge, which if you have been there is one of the most beautiful places to see. We decided to do an easy trail, the Eagle Creek Trail. After several hours and miles, as well as after seeing a number of beautiful sites, we made our way back to the car. After that long hike we were thirsty!
As we share the same mind, we were both thinking the same thing, let’s go to Washington for lunch! Luckily there was a brewpub just across the river called Everybody’s Brewing. We stopped in for some nachos and more importantly some delicious brew. This place was great, had an awesome decor and a friendly work staff. Highly recommended!
After our brief stint in Washington we headed back over the bridge, parked the car, and finally made our way to Big Horse Brew Pub. Early, during our visit to Golden Valley brewery in McMinnville, we had talked to a couple who said we needed to visit Big Horse and ask for their brewmaster… as they knew him personally. Unfortunately he had left for the day, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the fruits of his labor. We went up to enjoy an afternoon of beer. Of course we ordered the sampler which was delicious, but the view of Washington was almost in competition with the beer (We said almost, don’t worry, we haven’t gone crazy).
Thoroughly full of Big Horse’s beer, and also after obtaining some pretty awesome tshirts, we down to the Naked Winery tasting room for some wine tasting. We knew that Oregon is well known for both beer and wine, and although we were on the beer trail, we didn’t want to leave any alcoholic beverage out.
Next we decided it was probably best to take a nap, after such a long hike of course. We woke up and decided to head to Nora’s Fish House. Of course, the food was delicious! After such a fabulous dinner we decided to call it a night and head to bed. It was our last night in Hood River, but hopefully we’ll get to return one day.
Day 6 will bring us back to Portland to see what beer that city had for us.

Oregon Beer Trail – Day 4
Posted by admin | Beer Trail | Posted on September 9th, 2010
Day 4 of the beer trail was a big one. We woke up, took some pics of the B&B and then sat down to an amazing breakfast cooked by our host. The first course included creme brulee, a croissant and fresh berries. We were then brought out a tomato volcano including a hollowed out tomato stuffed with artichokes and a poached egg, on top of a spinach & potato pancake, on top of an english muffin. It was to die for!
After breakfast we headed east towards Mount Hood. We drove up the mountain until we came to the Timberline Lodge, the hotel where The Shining was filmed. We proceeded to this little hidden tavern/lunch place inside the lodge for lunch and a Mt Hood brew. After a great lunch, and listening to Lynn say “Red rum” and move her finger up and down a hundred times, we got in the car and headed North to Hood River.
Hood River is a great little town on the Washington State border. Here we visited Full Sail Brewery and had a sampler on the roof while looking out over the neighboring state. Then we went to Double Mountain Brewery to taste their wares. When sufficiently full of new beer we went back to the hotel to nap before dinner.
The locals gave us a number of great places to try for dinner. We decided on Brian’s Pourhouse which is, needless to say, awesome! In fact I think all the food in this state is awesome, great, cool, whatever. Oregon knows it’s fresh food. After dinner we decided to have a nice glass of wine at the bar next to our hotel before heading to bed. We planned on hiking the next morning and wanted to be sure to get up bright and early for that adventure.
Up next, Day 5 on the beer trail… hiking, Washington, and Big Horse.

Oregon Beer Trail – Day 3
Posted by admin | Beer Trail | Posted on September 8th, 2010
On Day 3 of the beer trail, we got up early (mostly due to the barking seals) and got on the road. We were headed north towards Pacific City. But first, we had to stop at Pig N’ Pancake for a most delicious breakfast.
After being sufficiently nourished, we got back on Route 101 North. The drive along the Pacific Ocean was amazing! The water was so blue and everything around it felt so crisp and clean. We wouldn’t have minded that commute to work, that’s for sure.
Upon getting to Pacific City, it was still a little too early to be hitting the brew, so instead we ventured down to the beach to get a closer look at Haystack Rock and the large number of surfers that were taking over the waves. We were amazed that people were surfing in such cold water! The view was beautiful and it was nice to sit and relax. We got a kick watching people just drive down on the sand, and also watching the boats just wash up on shore to dock. After a cup of coffee, we determined that it was late enough in the day to have our first brew.
In came Pelican Pub & Brewery. Pelican is a brewery that we hadn’t heard of before we got on the trail, however their beers were awesome. We started with a nice summer ale then went for the IPA which was paired on the menu with their IPA wings. That was another thing about most of the brewpubs on the trail. If they had food, they were pairing their beer with it on the menu… geniusness!
After a couple of brews and a great talk with the Pelican bartender, we got back on the road. This time, we were in route to McMinnville. Home to several brewpubs as well as in the heart of Oregon wine country. We had to say goodbye to the coast which, over the past couple of days, we had grown to love.
Heading inward we drove through multiple national forests until the land began to flatten out. After about an hour and a half we found ourselves in McMinnville… and also found ourselves very thirsty! We found a quaint B&B to stay at (A Tuscan Estate) and the wonderful owners, Jacques & Liz Rolland, gave us information about where to go for beer and also set up a brewery tour for us at Golden Valley Brewery. Since we had time before our tour, we stopped at the Hotel Oregon for a local brew on their rooftop. Then we headed off to Golden Valley which was by far one of our favorite stops on the trail! The brewmaster and assistant brewmaster took us through their whole setup. They even showed us the fresh hops that they picked that day from the neighboring farm. We got to taste the sweet wort of their latest brew (which was going to use the fresh hops) and we sat down at the bar for some tasting. We tried several of their wares including their flagship Red Thistle Ale. We even made some friends along the way! We highly recommend this stop on the trail.
After our Golden Valley adventure we went back to our B&B to change and head out for dinner. As it was a Monday night most everything was closed so we settled for some Thai food then headed in for the night. We continued our never ending rummy game before turning in for the night. Day 4 was going to be a busy one!
